…but if you need more deets, keep reading to learn how they benefit your hair and tips on how to use them.
1. Olaplex No. 3
You’ve probably heard a lot about Olaplex in the past year or so, and that’s because it’s frikkin’ amazing. In fact, it is the only product on the market that has been proven to repair broken protein bonds in the hair.
Olaplex makes a few different products, and some of them can only be purchased by licensed hairstylists (to be used as part of a bleaching service at the salon). However, the No. 3 Hair Perfector is the miraculous product you need to start using at home.
It not only repairs your hair but protects it from further damage.
This product was created by Dr. Eric Pressly and Dr. Craig Hawker, two chemists with no experience in the hair industry. When a top hairstylist came to them for guidance, they dove deeply into what happens when hair is damaged and how to repair it.
They found that:
- Hair is a naturally-occurring polymer, made of amino acid repeat units.
- As the hair becomes damaged, some of these repeat units go through “cleavage,” meaning that they break down.
- This leads to weaker hair that is more susceptible to breakage.
- Dr. Pressly and Dr. Hawker developed a chemical to repair these weak bonds.
Olaplex No. 3 is not a deep conditioner- it’s a bond builder. Therefore, it has a unique application process to follow.
To use Olaplex No 3:
- Apply to dirty hair (before shampooing). Wet your hair down and dry it with a towel before applying Olaplex.
- Apply a generous amount and make sure to thoroughly saturate your hair from scalp to ends. I comb it through with a wide-tooth comb (be gentle and make sure not to rip through your hair).
- Leave it on for at least 10 minutes, but longer if desired. I usually leave it on while I do chores and clean my house.
- Rinse your hair and then shampoo and condition as usual.
- Repeat 1-3 times per week, depending on how damaged your hair is.
So here’s the thing about hair… If your scalp isn’t healthy, your hair is gonna suck.
Over time, things like hair product, minerals, and dead skin build up on your scalp and in your hair follicles. This blocks nourishment to the new hair and hinders hair growth.
Fortunately, Nioxin has formulated these 3-step systems that revitalize your scalp and transform it into an optimal environment for healthy hair growth. In fact, in the 1980s, it was initially marketed as a product to treat androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness) without drugs.
These days, the company doesn’t claim that it will cure baldness. However, it does prevent hair from thinning, reduces breakage, strengthens hair, and cleanses the excessive buildup from the scalp.
Happy scalp = happy hair.
I did mention that Nioxin is a 3-step system, and the best results are seen when all three steps are utilized.
- The cleanser should be used first – massage the product into your scalp for a minute or two and then rinse.
- Next, apply the scalp therapy (aka conditioner). Run it through to the ends and let it sit for 1-3 minutes before rinsing. You’ll notice that your scalp will tingle, which basically means it’s working.
- After washing your hair, apply the scalp treatment to towel-dried hair and directly on the scalp. This product increases blood flow to the scalp, which stimulates hair growth.
I’m telling you that in all the years I’ve been doing hair, this is one of my favorite products on the market. It really does help with hair loss, and it makes your hair feel amazing after using it.
3. Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer
The Invisible Oil Primer by Bumble and Bumble is an incredibly versatile pre-styling product that softens, protects, conditions, and helps style dry, brittle hair.
One of it’s best features is that it shields hair from both UV rays and heat styling damage. This is incredibly important as both of those things can quickly wreck your hair and fade your expensive color.
This product was formulated with six different lightweight oils to condition your hair without weighing it down. It even detangles, fights frizz, and enhances shine.
The thing I absolutely love about this product is that it smooths and conditions my dry hair, but doesn’t make it greasy (and it doesn’t take much to weigh down my baby fine hair). What’s more, it miraculously defines my daughter’s curly hair, while taming her frizz.
In other words, it works miracles on several different types of hair.
While the “Heat/UV Protective Primer” wasn’t explicitly designed for hot tool styling, it’s often used as a heat protectant. It can be applied to damp hair before blow-drying, or directly to dry hair right before styling with hot tools.
4. Amika Silken Up
There’s no doubt that you know what dry shampoo is and odds are you probably use it. But have you ever tried dry conditioner?
I’m pretty sure I got some of this Amika Silken Up dry conditioner in one of my Birchboxes or Ipsy bags at some point… and let me tell you, it’s incredible. It’s a hair product unlike anything else I’ve ever tried.
When you use dry shampoo, it tends to mattify your hair and dull it down. Don’t get me wrong… I love dry shampoo, and I use it all the time. But following up with dry conditioner adds some shine and life back into your hair.
Not only does it soften your hair, but it also conditions it with super ingredients like Sea Buckthorn Berry.
More benefits of dry conditioner:
- Fights frizz
- Smooths unruly hair
- Protects hair against breakage
- Reduces split ends
- Strengthens hair
The best part of all? You get all that goodness in a dry product that won’t weigh down your hair at all.
5. Biolage CleanReset
Remember how we were just talking about buildup in your scalp? Well, it also happens to the strands of your hair.
Certain hair products that you regularly use will coat your hair over and over again, which can eventually lead to breakage. Additionally, minerals from hard water and swimming can also build up in your hair.
So how do you get rid of them? Clarify your hair once a week.
However, the problem with using a clarifying shampoo is that they’re designed to be harsh and strip your hair. Further hair damage leads to more porous hair, which then leads to more buildup.
So how do you win?
Well, the Biolage CleanReset Normalizing Shampoo is a fantastic hair product that stips the buildup without stripping your hair. I promise that after one use, my hair feels so much bouncier and lighter… but not at all too dry.
It’s even paraben-free and safe for color-treated hair!
This state-of-the-art formula was modeled after the self-cleansing properties of Lemongrass (which is also a main ingredient). If you want amazing hair, you should throw this bad boy into your weekly rotation.
6. Joico K-PAK Reconstructor
Just like doing a weekly clarifier will transform your hair, using a weekly reconstructing treatment will strengthen hair and protect it from future damage.
I’ve tried a lot of different deep conditioning treatments in my day, but the Joico K-PAK Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor has always been one of my favorites. First off, it smells incredible. Oh, and it makes your hair so soft and manageable with just a single use.
It works wonders for all hair types and doesn’t weigh down baby-fine hair. Not only does it instantly strengthen your hair with amino acids and keratin, but it also tames frizz, enhances natural shine, and replenishes the hair.
This product has won a ton of awards and is the top choice of many professional stylists across the world. While it works wonders with just 5 minutes on your hair, you can leave it on longer for even better results.
What is the secret, you ask? Joico states, “We added the highest concentration of Quadramine Complex, our famous protein-stocked repair formula, to maximize protection and reconstruction to each and every damaged strand.”
7. TIGI After Party
Last, but far from least is After Party by TIGI Bed Head. I promise you that this product has been stocked in my arsenal for the past ten years.
Aside from its eye-catching package, I’ve never seen anything else smooth down your hair the way this stuff can. It works wonders on the “I just rolled out of bed” type hair (which I often deal with).
It kills flyaways, softens the hair, tames frizz, and adds shine… all without weighing down the hair. Furthermore, it can be used on all hair types.
Its light fragrance even neutralizes bad odors in the hair, letting you go an extra day between shampoos.
TIGI describes this wonderful product as being able to “control funky fly-aways to silk-ify hair… the perfect party favor for our frizz prone friends.”
I’m telling you… it’s a non-negotiable for me.
Although there are other ways to combat hair damage and pump up the volume, nothing will feel as good as the right hair products.
I consider the seven hair products mentioned in this article to be real works of art. They all stand out from the competition and offer miraculous benefits you can’t find anywhere else. Furthermore, they’ve all played a part in my healthy hair journey and have never let me down.
Give them a shot. I know you’ll love them.
Until next time,
