Gabby Douglas’ Hair is Talked About More Than Her Gold Medals

Do you remember when Gabby Douglas became the first African American to win an individual gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics? This young girl accomplished so much more than anyone could ever dream of. However, the social media world focused in on Gabby Douglas’ hair rather than her accomplishments.

To further iterate, Gabby Douglas won a gold medal for both the Women’s Gymnastics Individual All-Around and Team All-Around in 2012. Standing tall at 4’11”, she was nicknamed the “flying squirrel” for her amazing ability to work the aerial bars. She is the first woman of African descent to become an all-around champion, and the first American Gymnast to win the gold for both the individual and team all-around.

Let me clarify what “all-around” means. It means she won the gold for the overall score of all women’s gymnastics events, including the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. At 16 years old, she has devoted her entire life and sacrificed her family and body to become an Olympic Gold Medalist. She is literally the poster child for women empowerment…

However, the Twitter community has more to talk about than her good form and execution. All anyone can talk about is Gabby Douglas’ hair.

Above is her hairstyle that was being heavily criticized. People, this is absolutely ridiculous. As a professional hairstylist, I think she looks absolutely beautiful. Take the picture at the beginning of this post for example. Her hair is awesome and she totally rocks natural beauty!

I’m sure while she is performing… you know, representing your country, fulfilling her dream, her hair is probably the last thing on her mind. Look at all gymnasts; their hair is always slicked back. She doesn’t want to deal with her hair flying in her face when she is doing triple backflips and stuff. No way.

I think everyone should focus on the good… She broke records and accomplished something that no other African American female has ever accomplished. Ever. At 16-year-old. She’s an amazing girl and an inspiration for all. And she is absolutely beautiful.
