So, a new thing I want to do each month is to review my three beauty box subscriptions: Ipsy, Birchbox, and Boxycharm. I will review each product in each box and compare them with the other products… and then I will let you know which box was the best out of the three. This is a fun way to try some new products and share my opinions with the world…but more importantly, these boxes are now a tax write-off for me. So let’s kick off the “Battle of the Boxes” series with January 2018:
I was quite happy with my Ipsy Glambag this month since it contained mostly makeup products. There’s nothing more I hate than getting samples designed for thick, curly hair, or nail polish that I’ll never use… but you can bet I’ll use all this makeup.
ABSOLUTE NEW YORK Eye Artiste in Posse
I was surprised how much I liked this eyeshadow. It went on smoothly. Plus, it had a great shimmer. It also didn’t have a lot of fallout, and it was super pigmented. I would like to try other colors from this line possibly.
SLMISSGLAM L36 Tapered Highlight Brush
Let’s just say that this brush was a lot better at applying highlighter than the brush I usually use. I will be using this one from now on.
CIATÉ LONDON Fierce Flicks Eyeliner
I wasn’t too fond of this eyeliner for overall usage. The applicator was pretty stiff which made it hard to get a clean line (especially with my hooded lids). It was also a bit cakey. It’s not a complete loss though; I think this would be awesome for straightening off the edges of winged eyeliner.
PURLISSE BEAUTY Blue Lotus Seed Mud Mask/Exfoliant
I really put this product to the test, since my skin was going through a rough patch when I tried it. Thankfully, it instantly made my skin feel better when I washed it off. It calmed down the inflammation, evened the skin tone, and made my skin feel incredibly soft. The downside to this product is that it had a burning/tingling feeling when it was drying and I can’t decide if I liked that or not.
HOLA NEON Velvet Liquid Lipstick in DF
I was pleasantly surprised when trying this lipstick. I’ve never really been much of a lipstick fan, and I tried this one right before walking into work. The shade is not something I would have chosen on my own as it is darker than I would prefer. However, it looked really good on me and gave me a totally different look. Although the shade is perfect for winter, I would probably go with a lighter color for the warmer months. I also got a ton of compliments all day long, and my coworker even bought a tube. I don’t have a lot to compare it to, but it seemed to last most of the day without too many additional applications. It just might have turned me into a lipstick wearer.
It’s a tough one between the HOLA NEON lipstick and ABSOLUTE NEW YORK eyeshadow, but I think I’d have to go with the eyeshadow as my fav this month.
This was definitely not the best Birchbox I’ve ever received. All of the products were mediocre, but nothing was fabulous this month.
Balance Me Congested Skin Serum
This daily serum is supposed to refine pores and balance skin tone without over-drying, and it can be used as a spot treatment for acne. After the first use, I didn’t notice a huge difference. However, after a few minutes, I realized that my face was really soft and sooth. I also took before and after pictures (just a few minutes apart from each other), and I feel like you can definitely tell the difference.
Here is what it looked like after putting the rest of my face on:
I’m gonna give it a thumbs up!
R+Co DEATH VALLEY Dry Shampoo
I love me some dry shampoo.
I don’t know how I feel about this dry shampoo. I really liked that it didn’t leave my hair feeling talcy after using it, and it didn’t turn it white. At first, I felt like it didn’t work too well, but after a more in-depth inspection, I found that it was as good as the Batiste Dry Shampoo that I usually use. The downside? The full-size product runs about $30 per bottle, which I just can’t justify.
ARROW ENERGIZE Skin Tint
This product seems to work like a tinted moisturizer. As you can tell by my pictures below (before using the product, after using it, and after putting on the rest of my makeup), there really wasn’t much of a difference. It did, however, give me some light coverage which would be perfect for those low-key makeup days. I’d consider purchasing a full-sized bottle.
DOUCCE Freematic Eyeshadow
This eyeshadow was pretty nice. It could have been a tad more pigmented, and it did have some glittery fallout (I love glitter, but that can get annoying). I think overall, it was a good eyeshadow and I’d like to try blending it with some darker colors.
VERB Hydrating Mask
At first, I thought this was a face mask since it doesn’t specify on the packaging. However, it is actually a hair mask, which is good since I live in Nevada where there is hardly any humidity. When I first applied it, I wasn’t sure what to think. It didn’t feel like anything special. Even after I washed it out, my hair didn’t feel much different than it usually does after washing it. The magic happened as my hair started to dry. I noticed how soft it felt, and it got softer and smoother as it dried.
I tried about a million hair masks, and I would have to say that this is a keeper. Two thumbs up.
I’m gonna go with the VERB Hydrating Mask, just because of how soft it made my hair.
This was the first time I ever tried Boxycharm, and let me tell you… I am impressed. I felt like you got so much great stuff for $21. In fact, each product was worth more than $21 on its own. I’m pretty excited to see everything else I’ll get in the future.
It Cosmetics Brow Power
I really, really like this product, and I’m stoked that I got to try it because I’ll probably buy it again in the future. Until now, I’ve always used a cheaper Rimmel brow pencil, but IT Cosmetics is much better quality. The only thing I like more about the Rimmel is that I was able to sharpen it to the perfect point. The IT Cosmetics Brow Power is pretty sharp on its own though (self-sharpening?), and it’s really nothing a little concealer couldn’t clean up. The shade is also pretty good too.
PÜR Complexion Authority Cheek Palette
I was equally as excited about this product. It’s so nice to have a highlighter, bronzer, and blush in one compact unit. All of the colors are great and go on smoothly. I would also be willing to purchase this again in the future.
Crown Pro Glam Metals Palette
This palette is pretty cool, and I love all of the shimmery colors, but I wish it had a few mattes in there. They weren’t super pigmented but not bad. I’d like to play around with this some more and mix it with some colors from other palettes.
Dr. Brandt pores no more Luminizer Primer
This product was also pretty dope. It fills in your pores, primes your skin and adds a little bit of shimmer. You can visually see how much better my skin looks after using it (ignore the sleepless look in my eyes… I have a 10-month old baby that likes to party at 2 a.m.). I can’t wait to play around with it more.
Grande Cosmetics Hydrating Lip Plumper
I can’t really give an accurate review on this because the color is pretty rough, meaning I’ll probably never use it again. However, it did make my lips tingle, so I guess that means it must work. I didn’t notice a significant difference in the plumpness of my lips, and since I probably won’t use it again, I probably will never know what could have been.
I think I’m gonna have to go with the IT Cosmetics Brow Power. Woooo!
I think Boxycharm gave me the best value for the money this month. I felt like I got a lot of outstanding products that will last a long time. I’m pretty excited about it.
If you are interested in Boxycharm, check it out here. It’s an incredible deal.
