They grow it out for years, just to realize that they want short hair. After a week of short hair, they realize that they miss their long hair and start the cycle all over again. Actually, in today’s world of the man bun, some of you guys may be trying to grow long hair faster too.  Well, look no further; these 8 tips are surefire ways to grow long hair as fast as possible.

Do you want to grow long hair faster than average? Let's talk about some tips that totally work!

Since I want to grow my hair out, much like you, and I am sick of putting in my extensions every day, I am going to teach you ways that will legitimately help your hair grow fast.

1. Protect Your Hair From Damage

The first thing you can do to help grow long hair faster is to eliminate all sources of damage.

Just so you know, I used to be the queen of damaged hair.

I can’t even count how many times I colored my hair black, just to bleach it back to platinum blonde again, and back and forth.

Do you want super long hair but it takes forever to grow? Here are 8 surefire ways to grow hair faster. The first thing you should do is...
Within about a year and a half…

My Hair Routine:

  • I try to go as long as possible in between hair colors to give it time to heal (I actually haven’t colored my hair in over a year now).
  • I’m constantly reconditioning my hair in between colorings. I really like the Joico K-Pak Reconstructor.  When I’m at home doing chores, I’ll put some conditioner in my hair, put a plastic bag around it, and let it do magic.  Sometimes, I even sleep with it in my hair.
  • I also try to keep my flat iron use minimal; I only style my hair when I have to.  If you do straighten your hair every day, make sure to use a protectant/conditioning spray, like the HealthySexyHair “Soya Want Flat Hair Flat Iron Spray”, which infuses your hair with protein as you use it.
  • I also use high-quality shampoo/conditioner.  At the moment, my favorite is the Arbonne Fortifying shampoo and conditioner.  They are formulated with all natural, botanical ingredients, and without sulfates, parabens, animal by-products, etc.  The ColorLast Technology and special botanical blend protects and moisturizes your hair while increasing vibrancy and extending color.  Trust me, you’ll love it.

2. Trim Your Hair Every Six Weeks

Do you want super long hair but it takes forever to grow? Here are 8 surefire ways to grow hair faster. The first thing you should do is...

A lot of people don’t think cutting your hair will help grow long hair faster. And although it doesn’t actually make the hair grow, it will eliminate split ends, which could lead to shorter hair. The best analogy I have ever heard is to think of your hair like a piece of rope. When rope starts to fray, you have to burn the piece that is frayed, or else it will continue to fray further up the rope. If you have split ends, and you don’t trim them, they may continue to split further up your hair, causing breakage.  Breakage means shorter hair. We can’t have that if we are trying to grow long hair faster.

You don’t have to cut a lot of hair off. Just be very sure to express to your hair stylist that you are trying to grow it out, and want to just cut the split ends. Also be sure to let them know not to cut off more than a quarter/half-an-inch. The better communication you give to your stylist, the better he/she can understand what you want and deliver it to you.

3. Take Vitamins That Grow Long Hair Faster

Do you want super long hair but it takes forever to grow? Here are 8 surefire ways to grow hair faster. The first thing you should do is...

You probably always hear that prenatal vitamins grow long hair faster. I have researched that topic a lot in the past, and it turns out that the abundance of hormones produced while pregnant is what will really grow your hair fast, not the prenatal vitamins.

Here is a hair lesson: For normal people, at any given time, 90% of their hair is in the growth phase, while the other 10% is in a resting phase. This is why your hair grows back uneven after a haircut. After the resting phase, your hair follicle prepares for the shedding phase. It is normal for anyone to lose about 50-100 hair strands per day.

The increased level of estrogen present in pregnant women causes ALL of your hair to stay in its growing phase. Therefore, you are not losing any hair (which gives the impression that your hair is growing faster). Hair texture and color have also been noted to change during pregnancy. Now keep in mind, before you rush out to get pregnant, that pregnant women lose a TON of hair after they have a baby.  I personally just went through this.  My hair was pretty thick while I was pregnant, but it has been coming out in clumps since I had my baby earlier this year.  This is because the estrogen level drops back down to normal so then we shed all of the hair that they didn’t lose while we were pregnant.

So What Vitamins Work?

Even if prenatal vitamins are a bust, there are still other vitamins that help your hair grow faster. Vitamins rich in B-complex are known to help your hair grow a great deal. Vitamin B-complex contains biotin, folic acid, and inositol which help rotate the growth cycle of your hair quicker than it did before. There is even vitamin B-complex shampoo that is said to help your hair grow faster.  It is also said that flaxseed oil, vitamin E, and vitamin A all also help grow long hair faster. Personally, I have used the Nioxin Vitamins that are designed for growing hair, and also “hair, skin, and nails” pills, and have seen positive effects with both of them.

4. Eliminate Factors That Impede Hair Growth

Do you want super long hair but it takes forever to grow? Here are 8 surefire ways to grow hair faster. The first thing you should do is...

Keep in mind that everything you put in your body comes out through your hair. Different types of medications cause different reactions to your hair. Sometimes, medications will cause a color or perm to not take, and also some can make your hair fall out.  Your hair will not grow faster if you are constantly losing hair.  Common types of medications that cause hair loss are acne medications, antibiotics, antidepressants, birth control, anti-clotting pills, cholesterol-lowering, drugs that suppress the immune system, epilepsy drugs, drugs used in breast cancer, high-blood pressure medications, hormone replacement, mood stabilizers, steroids, weight-loss drugs and thyroid medications (whew!). It does depend on what dosage you take and how sensitive you are to them. I don’t know too much about this, so I would recommend talking to a doctor about what you take.

Now, medications are a hard thing to deal with because many of us need our drugs.  But another thing to keep in mind is that if you are unhealthy, so is your hair. Eating healthier food, drinking a lot of water, not smoking/drinking alcohol are all factors that play a part in hair growth.

Last, but definitely not least, is stress. Stress does a number of horrific things to your body but can also trigger hair loss. It’s easier said than done sometimes, but try to de-stress if you want to grow long hair faster.

5. Stimulate Your Scalp to Grow Long Hair Faster

Do you want super long hair but it takes forever to grow? Here are 8 surefire ways to grow hair faster. The first thing you should do is...

There’s an old wives tale that states if you brush your hair 100 times every night before you go to sleep, it will help grow long hair faster. Not only is that not true but brushing your hair is actually bad for your hair. The bristles get caught in small tangles and usually rip hair out, creating our enemy, breakage. Side note: when your hair is wet, you should comb it with a wide-tooth comb to help eliminate breakage.

Scientific Brushing

There is something called “Scientific Brushing” that is said to help grow long hair faster though. It’s vital that you use a natural bristle brush and remember to brush against your scalp, not your hair. You brush all around your hairline first and then you brush in 1/2 inch subsections throughout your scalp. When you brush, do a rolling motion. The bristles stimulate and bring blood flow to your scalp, which encourages hair to grow faster. Do this before you shampoo your hair. I would also comb it first to make sure there are no tangles. Scientific brushing can also help with dandruff.

When you shampoo your hair, really massage your scalp. This does the same thing as the scientific brushing.  Sometimes, it’s even better to shampoo your hair twice so you get a better lather. You should spend a few minutes massaging your scalp. Not only does it help, but it also feels good!

6. Nioxin / Invati

Do you want super long hair but it takes forever to grow? Here are 8 surefire ways to grow hair faster. The first thing you should do is...

Working in the hair industry, I have heard a ton of good things about Nioxin. In fact, I had one client that specifically told me that it was so weird because her hair was growing so much, and she had a lot of new growth. She couldn’t figure out why it was growing. I asked her what she used and she said “Nioxin.” I told her that Nioxin is formulated to grow long hair faster and she didn’t even know that; now she’s hooked on it for life. She usually buys another bottle before she even runs out, so she never has to go without it. It works by detoxifying your scalp, removing and neutralizing toxins, cleaning out the pores, and reducing scalp inflammation. It also cleanses hormones from the hair follicle that causes male pattern baldness.

Does Nioxin Work?

It’s a controversial topic if Nioxin actually works or not to grow long hair faster. The answer is that it works differently for everyone. I’ve heard people say that they’ve used it for months upon months with no difference. I also know people who swear by it.

It is not known if it actually makes your hair grow faster or just stops you from losing hair. Either way, I believe it works, and the fact that it keeps your scalp healthy, can’t hurt. The best results are seen when the cleanser, scalp therapy conditioner, and the scalp treatment (which you spray on after you get out of the shower) are all used together. I recommend a starter kit like this one, but I also know that it takes a few months to start seeing noticeable results. I have heard people say that they think Nioxin dries their hair out, but my own personal experience is that it makes my hair feel very soft and hydrated when I use it.

Aveda Invati

Yesterday, it was brought to my attention that there is a new product similar to Nioxin, made by Aveda, called Invati. I can’t really tell you anything about it, but it is supposed to work well, and Aveda is a trustworthy name, so I would expect it to be good.

7. Eat Your Protein

Do you want super long hair but it takes forever to grow? Here are 8 surefire ways to grow hair faster. The first thing you should do is...

I know someone who is getting a gastrointestinal bypass real soon. The doctors instructed her that she needs to eat a lot of protein before, and after the surgery. The doctor told her that all the extra protein will make her hair grow faster. It makes sense, right? Hair is composed of 80% protein. If your body is not getting enough protein, it won’t have enough to give your hair follicles, and therefore your hair will grow slower.

8. Rogaine

Do you want super long hair but it takes forever to grow? Here are 8 surefire ways to grow hair faster. The first thing you should do is...

If all else fails, there is always Rogaine.  Rogaine is the only FDA approved an over-the-counter topical medication that is actually proved to grow long hair faster. Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine, and exactly how it works is unproven. It was originally a drug used to treat high blood pressure.  However, in further studies, it was discovered that it works better to grow long hair faster than keeping blood pressure down.  A 16-week study showed that 85% of people using it correctly experienced new hair growth. Only mild side-effects have been reported, including scalp irritation and itching. I say it’s worth a shot!

  1. As a guy, I am not particularly interested in growing my hair, especially since I have a brush cut. However, the tips you provide are what I use to KEEP MY Hair. I must say, since my last class reunion, they work, at least compared to everyone else I went to school with.

  2. I had super long hair for around 7 years, down to my belly button and then I grew bored of it and a bit over a year ago, I chopped it really short (admittedly a bit too short), at my collarbones. I hated it, then liked it, and now I am trying to grow it out long again. I heard that massaging your scalp, does help to grow it out longer though luckily, my hair grows out pretty fast. This was a really informative post with heaps of great tips like Nixon.

  3. I recently finished up five months on chemo, so I need all the hair I can get! It started growing back when I was on Taxo though. Right now it’s at the two-month mark and still in the fluffy peach fuzz stage, so it’s hard to say what the color will be now or if it’s turned curly or wavy as does happen at times. I’ve had short hair before and the worst part of hair is trying to get it trimmed every six weeks. That’s such a chore.

  4. Natural and easy ways to grow thick & smooth hair are following the below methods twice a week before applying shampoo and conditioner:
    1) Oil your hair
    2) Apply on hair a pack consisting of 1 whole egg, 2 tablespoons yoghurt (depending on hair length) and 1 tablespoon honey(optional). Leave it on 30mins-1 hr and wah it afterwards with cold water
You will experience a positive change in your hair from the very first use

  5. What a wealth of knowledge you have shared with us.

My natural hair is thick and when relaxed it went limp. Colouring my hair black did not help matters- far too many chemicals. I ended up wearing hair extensions to give my hair body. Eight/nine years ago I wore braids to grow my perm out and I have never looked back. I doubt I will perm my hair again.

  6. Wait… I came here for other reasons but then stayed cause I like your articles. But I just read the one about hair myths and you say that trim your hair every 6/7 weeks does NOT help your hair growing faster. But in this article you’re saying just the opposite!!

    • Haha good call! Technically, it won’t make your hair grow faster but will prevent breakage, which would make your hair appear to grow slower. Does that make sense? Haha. Also, thank you for the kind words! I’m glad you like my articles! 🙂

  7. One more item to add to your list is Oils! The right oils will penetrate both hair and scalp moisturizing and nurturing the cell structure. Certain botanical oils are now clinically proven to increase cellular turn over, nourish follicle cells, increase collagen activity and improve anchoring of the strand. I would welcome the opportunity to get you products to review. Oils will slow hair loss, regrow lost hair, increase growth and improve over all hair health.

  8. Does Rogaine cause blonde highlights and/or blonde hair color to turn black, specifically at the roots? My blonde highlights look awful within one week and I am wondering if Rogaine is to blame? Very drying of hair too.

  9. I am 40+ business woman working hardly day and night to improve my business. I have a big bald spot in my top head. My friend told about Nuhairrx serum and i started using for few months. I noticed a not big difference in the first 2 weeks. But after few months, I had lots of new hair growing in. I used this product combined with the vitamins. I am very satisfied.Thx.

  10. Hey there just a quick question? Can you still dye your hair while you use nioxin?

  11. I was taking MSM pills for my problem knee & I noticed a TON of regrowth from my roots- as my hair is dyed about 4 shades DARKER than my natural hair, the amount of regrowth was very noticeable and definitely dramatic.
When I was getting my roots colored to match the rest of my head, I told my hairdresser the only supplement I took was MSM, I dont even take multi vitamins.
She explained that MSM actually keeps the folicle in ‘growth phase’ longer than usual, hense the longer hair & surprising rate of regrowth.
MSM is also very good for your joints and overall health!!
    I would definitely reccommend it!

    • Thats interesting! Ive heard that before and thought it was a hoax! Ill have to do an article about it! Thanks (:

    • Gloria Goethals Reply

I started taking MSM because my doctor said it would help with joint pain. I decided to stop bleaching my hair in January and I noticed my roots came in FAST. I’m trying to grow my hair out so I was excited. I measured the growth over a 3 month period and recorded 2 1/2 inches. It might not sound like much, but that’s above average. I also take biotin and a women’s vitamin. I believe good nutrition helps a lot.

      • Thanks for that information! I have actually heard that same thing from other people before too…

  12. There is no quick fix for fast hair growth. Your hair grows in cycles. The best way to make get longer hair is to keep it healthy. You can do this by washing your hair to keep the follicle clean and clog free and to keep your scalp moisturize. Also take care of split ends. It’s not that your hair isn’t growing fast enough. It might just be that the rate of breakage is faster than the rate of hair growth. So, controlling breakage should be the priority.

  13. Im so glad i accidentally came upon this site! I swear my hair grows sooooo slowly that even SEVERAL hairdressers in my past have cpmmented and marveled at it. My doctor has teated me dor everything under the sun and says I am healthy. Imagine now my frustration…and stress. I plan to try a few of the things I read because i have never hears them before…and FINALLY I have hope again. Thank you Hollee.
