It’s summer and you want to look like you’ve been at the beach all day, right? Beautiful beach waves are a timeless hairstyle that can make any girl’s summer unforgettable, but do you know what products you need to create the perfect beach waves? Let me fill you in….
Mousse will help define your natural curls if you have them and will add extra body to straight hair. Additionally, it will tame down frizz and keep the hairstyle in place without the crunchiness of hairspray. It’s definitely something you’ll want to use to achieve beautiful beach waves. My favorite mousse to use for beach waves is the Moroccanoil Texture Beach Wave Mousse.
To use this product, dispense a golf-ball-sized dollop into your hands and rub them together. Then, use your fingers to run it through the rest of your hair. Oh, and I should mention that you’ll want to use this on towel-dried hair, but still damp hair. The reason I love this product is that it will give you the perfect beach look without drying out your hair. It’s salt-free formula allows flexible styling, while protecting your hair from UV rays and keeping your color vibrant.
A hair diffuser is a brilliant way to define natural curls and tame down frizz.
If you don’t know what a diffuser is, it’s an attachment for the hair dryer, that protects hair from direct heat. It also provides a boost to the curls that would otherwise be pulled down by gravity and length. If you have curly hair, a diffuser is your best friend. If you have straight hair, you should still use a diffuser to encourage natural waves. Anything is better than nothing.
Here is a fabulous tutorial by Loida Velasquez on how to use one, if you don’t know… and here is the hair dryer/diffuser attachment she uses.
3. Sea Salt Spray
What better way to get beautiful beach waves than to add a little bit of the beach to your hair? The salt in the sea salt spray adds a ton of texture and volume, and will literally create the perfect beachy look. The downside to using this type of product is that it can dry your hair. The good news is that most companies use Epsom salt instead of sea salt, which is far less drying on your hair.
My favorite salt spray is the Surf Spray by Bumble and bumble. It will definitely recreate the “fresh off the beach look,” while adding moisture to your hair. To use this product, spray on damp or dry hair, twist and twirl your hair to add texture and let it dry (or diffuse).
2. Curling Wand
The curling wand may be newer to the hair scene, but don’t underestimate its power; this is your best friend when it comes to beach waves. Now I’m gonna take it one step further and tell you about the “Beachwaver,” which will deliver perfect waves for your hair.
The Beachwaver makes it really easy for you, but if you don’t have $130 to spend on hot tools, any curling wand should work. Just remember that the bigger the barrel, the looser your waves will be. I love this tutorial by Corinne Montanaro that shows you how to achieve the perfect look.
1. Dry Texturizing Spray
To finish off your beautiful beach waves, you’ll want to use some dry texturizing spray. Although this product is not a substitute for dry shampoo, it is similar to dry shampoo mixed with hairspray. It will add texture to your finished product, which is a must for beach waves. It will also add some hold to your style, but with a more natural finish than hairspray.
I recommend Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, as it is one of the best dry texturizers on the market right now and has won many awards. It works by absorbing oil at the roots without leaving a powder residue (which can help you re-wear your style the next day) and adding amazing texture to your hair. To use, just spray the product on your hair and work through with your fingers.
