Maybe you've heard of the term, "hair toner", but do you know what it means? Learn how to use one to give your color a finished look...

How Hair Toner Works:

First off, there are different types of toners out there.  However, they all basically do the same thing: add tone to the color.

Typically, they are used to add a tone to bleached hair, since bleaching the hair usually results in some shade of yellow. In other words, you can tone the hair something like a strawberry blonde, platinum blonde or ash blonde to finish off the look.

You would also use a hair toner to “tone” out unwanted brassy or golden tones in hair. Since blue is the complimentary color of orange, you should use a blue-based (ash) toner to cancel out orange tones (See Hair 101). Similarly, violet-based (platinum) toners will cancel unwanted yellow tones.
